One Counselor, 2,000 Agents, and a Reddit Thread That Does the Triage

DOLE requires a company psychologist. On Manila BPO floors, that means one on-site counselor booked out weeks ahead while night-shift agents diagnose their own burnout online.

Book a session with your company psychologist and the earliest slot lands three weeks out. By then the panic that sent you looking has either passed or hardened into something you stopped calling panic.

DOLE rules put a mental health program inside every workplace, occupational health staff included. On paper a BPO floor has its psychologist. In practice one counselor covers a building of 2,000 agents, and the math never bends in your favor.

The quota is a headcount, not a service

A single practitioner cannot see thousands of people. So the on-site slot becomes a formality that clears the audit. The company can point to a name, a room, a program document, and technically comply with everything the law asks.

Compliance and access are two different things. The line item exists. The appointment does not, at least not on the day the shift breaks you.

Night-shift work makes it worse. The counselor keeps day hours. Your body runs on a schedule that puts you at your lowest around 3 a.m., when the only support desk open is the one you scroll to yourself.

Reddit becomes the intake form

So the triage moves online. Subreddits fill with posts that read like case notes: chest tightness on the commute, the dread before login, three coffees and a hand that won't stop shaking. Strangers reply with what worked for them, which vitamin, which breathing app, which resignation date.

Some of it helps. A lot of it is people with no license telling other unlicensed people whether their symptoms count as burnout, depression, or just Tuesday. Self-diagnosis at 4 a.m. is not care. It is the gap between the roster and the counselor's calendar, filled by whoever is awake.

The Mental Health Act promised access, not a queue. What agents get is a queue with a nice name.

What the metrics never log

Attrition on these floors runs high, and companies treat it as a recruitment problem. Hire faster, onboard faster, backfill the seats. The people leaving already told them why on their way out, usually in an exit form no one reads against the wellness budget.

A real ratio would cost money. More counselors, hours that match a night shift, referrals to psychiatrists the HMO actually covers without a fight. None of that shows up in a quota that only asks whether one qualified name sits in the building.

The next time a client audit asks about mental health support, the answer will be yes, program in place, psychologist on staff. The agent who waited three weeks and gave up will not be in the room to correct it. The Reddit thread will still be there at 4 a.m., doing the job the payslip claimed was covered.
