Kumamoto Quake Halts Toyota, Sony and Chip Suppliers Across Kyushu

TOKYO, July 30 (Reuters) - Following are companies that have suspended operations in Japan's Kumamoto and nearby prefectures after a magnitude 7.1 quake hit the area on Tuesday, killing at least 17 people.

AEON KYUSHU

Seventeen of Aeon Kyushu's 40 stores in Kumamoto prefecture have temporarily suspended operations. Its shopping mall in Kumamoto is badly damaged after a post-quake explosion, and rescue workers are working round-the-clock to locate people trapped or unaccounted for.

AISIN 

Aisin, one of Japan's largest automotive parts suppliers and a core member of the Toyota Group, has halted its plant in Kumamoto City. It is inspecting damage to facilities while working to restore operations.

EBARA CORP

The pump maker halted operations at a factory in Nankan town that manufactures semiconductor production equipment.    

HONDA MOTOR 

Japan's second-biggest automaker is suspending operations at its Kumamoto motorcycle factory through Friday to allow repairs to quake-damaged parts of the plant.

HORIBA

The measurement systems manufacturer said its chipmaking equipment-related unit of Horiba Stec's factory in Aso, Kumamoto partially resumed production on Thursday after it confirmed no significant damage to facilities.

MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC

The company said its two factories in Kumamoto making power semiconductor devices partially resumed cleanroom operations on Thursday afternoon after a temporary suspension.

MITSUBISHI MOTORS

While the carmaker has no assembly line in Kyushu, it will suspend production of some cars at its factory in Okayama prefecture from Thursday evening due to supply disruptions caused by the earthquake, a spokesperson said.

NIPPON PAPER INDUSTRIES

The company's Yatsushiro mill was affected by the collapse of a chimney, disrupting operations and leaving workers missing or injured.

NISSAN MOTOR  

Nissan Motor Kyushu and Nissan Shatai Kyushu, both located in Fukuoka Prefecture, will partially suspend production this week due to earthquake-related delays in the supply of parts.

RENESAS ELECTRONICS

The company has suspended operations at its Kawajiri plant in Kumamoto City and Nishiki plant in Nishiki town. The semiconductor manufacturer began inspections of clean-room facilities on Wednesday morning to assess any damage to buildings and equipment.

SONY

Operations at Sony Semiconductor Manufacturing's Kumamoto Technology Centre remained suspended as of Wednesday, said its parent, Sony Group's Sony Semiconductor Solutions. It said it was evaluating damage to the site's building and manufacturing lines.

TOKAI CARBON The carbon products maker and one of the world's largest graphite electrode manufacturers partially resumed production at its plant in Ashikita, Kumamoto on Thursday after a temporary halt. Its products are used in semiconductors and solar panels.

TOKYO ELECTRONThe semiconductor manufacturing equipment maker halted operations at two Kumamoto facilities. It is preparing to fully resume production from the start of next week.

TOPPAN

The major printing firm partially resumed operations at its plant in Tamana, Kumamoto on Wednesday, but manufacturing of semiconductor-related electronic components there has yet to restart, a company spokesperson said.

TOYOTA MOTOR

Operations at Toyota Motor Kyushu's Miyata, Kanda and Kokura plants in Fukuoka Prefecture will be suspended from late Wednesday to late Friday, taking into consideration safety and logistics, the world's largest automaker by sales said. Its unit Daihatsu will also suspend operations at a small car factory and an engine factory in Kyushu later this week, citing supplier issues.
