Cebu Architecture Grads Were Promised Drafting Jobs. Midjourney Got There First.

Professors said AI would replace renderers last. Firms in Cebu IT Park stopped hiring junior drafters anyway, and the licensure pipeline has nowhere to send fresh graduates.

Walk into architecture firms around Cebu IT Park or along Gorordo this year and ask the partners how many fresh graduates they hired. The honest ones will say close to none. The polite ones will say they are restructuring.

Cebu's architecture programs spent the last decade telling students that drafting and rendering were the safe entry points. Get good at AutoCAD and SketchUp, learn V-Ray, master Lumion, and you would have a few years of junior work before anyone expected design judgment from you. That runway is shrinking fast.

The junior tier is disappearing

Firms that used to keep several drafters on payroll now run leaner, with senior staff prompting Midjourney and Stable Diffusion for client presentations. Renders that once took a junior staff member days now come back in an afternoon, and the client often cannot tell the difference at the pitch stage.

The work being absorbed is exactly the work fresh graduates were trained for: producing options, iterating on facades, dressing up site plans, rendering the same lobby from multiple angles. Principals describe it as a productivity gain. Graduates describe it as the door closing.

What the schools said

Architecture faculty across the country spent years reassuring students that creative judgment would protect them from automation. The conventional line was that AI would touch accounting and admin before it touched design. That forecast aged badly.

Image models came for visual production first because visual production is what these tools do best. The board exam still tests hand drafting and code compliance, which means new architects are graduating qualified for a job description that firms are no longer writing.

The math on staying

Entry-level drafting in Cebu was never well paid to begin with, and the graduates who held onto roles are now competing with senior staff for a shrinking pool of junior tasks, at the same rate, with worse hours. Some firms have quietly merged the drafter and admin job descriptions.

Some graduates are pivoting to BIM coordination, which is harder to automate because it involves clashing real-world systems and arguing with contractors. Others are chasing visualization gigs on Upwork, where they are losing the same bids to AI-generated portfolios from sellers they cannot verify.

The licensure question nobody is asking

The board exam, the apprenticeship requirement, the documented practice hours before you can sign drawings: all of it assumes a firm willing to hire you and assign you billable work. Architecture in the Philippines is a regulated profession built on a pipeline that firms are no longer funding at the bottom rung.

The professional organizations have said little. The schools keep enrolling new cohorts at private-program tuition rates most families stretch to cover, and the brochures still show students at drafting tables.

Graduates from recent batches are reportedly drifting into BPO work, opening small build-and-design Facebook pages, or looking abroad for technician roles that pay a fraction of a licensed architect's wage. The drafting table is fading. The contract that came with it, years of apprenticeship in exchange for a signature on your license, is a piece of paper firms can no longer afford to honor.
